Ed Carr, Accolade Wines Chief Sparkling Winemaker, has been awarded Winemaker of the Year at the 4th annual Australian Society of Viticulture and Oenology’s (ASVO) Awards for Excellence.
Ed graciously accepted the trophy in front of 200 peers and industry leaders at the presentation evening at Carrick Hill, last night, making history as the first sparkling winemaker to win and join the prestigious list of past winners who include Wendy Cameron, Louisa Rose and Sue Bell.
The 2015 ASVO judges commended Ed on his exemplary performance and commitment to sparkling wine over many years, making him a deserving winner of the ASVO Winemaker of the Year.
“There is a strong focus on his work in Tasmania although Ed has been amazing in improving the style direction, quality and reputation of Australian sparkling wine.
“Ed is widely known to be an outstanding winemaker, mainly through his record in wine shows, and has achieved better results than any other in the area of sparkling wine. There is no doubt whatsoever that he is fully deserving of being awarded an ASVO Winemaker of the Year”.
Of the award, Ed notes the recognition is a tribute to all of those involved in the journey. “I am proud of what has been achieved with the Arras brand since its inception from the 1995 vintage, the continual evolution of the wine style reflected in the multiple labels has been immensely pleasing.
“The quality and style we have crafted from Tasmanian fruit has achieved and in many ways exceeded our initial expectations and now it is very rapidly being recognised as world class standard sparkling wine,” said Ed. Since their inception, the ASVO Awards for Excellence has attracted a high calibre of entrants and are now recognised within the industry as a demonstration of expertise for wine industry professionals to aspire to and achieve.
The ASVO awards aim to promote excellence through recognition and reward of high achievers in innovative practice; those who are striving to raise practice standards and, individuals who, through their professionalism, provide a model of practice which others seek to emulate.
